Ready, steady, goat!
Lack of drama as Cambridge clinch Goat Race title for fourth successive year
Cambridge cruised to a double sporting victory this weekend by clinching a win at the annual Goat Race.
While the Boat Race was beset by controversy, its hircine counterpart was notable for its lack of drama. Three-time victor Cambridge once again ran away with the medal – literally.
Over 1,600 people cheered on the two golden Guernsey goats at London’s Spitalfields City Farm where the Race was been held for the past four years.
Lightness and agility gave Cambridge the upper hand at the start of the race, with the Oxford goat looking significantly chubbier since its last outing.
Buoyed on by a farmhand bearing a bucket of treats, the two goats were neck-and-neck before Cambridge trotted ahead to an easy victory.
Cambridge clocked in at 1:26 minutes, with Oxford following at a disastrous 4:12 minutes.
Oxford later attempted to eat Cambridge’s medal during the prize-giving ceremony, hosted by Big Brother star Josie Gibbons. The two goats later made up, with both animals nuzzling each other in congratulations.
“I thought it was a worthy win, considering the series of unfortunate events that blighted the Boat Race,” said Churchill graduate Juliet Shardlow.
Spitalfields City Farm raised a record amount of money from the Race, with all proceeds going to the community farming and animal welfare programmes.
