Clare Hall’s ‘Black and White’ birthday extravaganza
Get ready to be transported back to 1966 in style, with Clare Hall’s 50th anniversary birthday bonanza Ball
May Week may seem like a world away, especially with the prospect of looming exams and dissertation deadlines. However, there is no time like the present to start your preparation; think of it as productive procrastination this exam term.
One of the many surprises coming next month is the arrival of Clare Hall's May Ball. The Ball is set for Thursday 16th June, and could make for a celebratory closing to a fun-filled, mad, yet magical May Week.
The 50th anniversary of the graduate-only college is being celebrated in style, in honour of Truman Capote's "Party of the century" in 1966. The black and white may appear at first a little monotone but it is far from dull; expect sophistication and elegance.
The design is simple, but refined. Clare Hall may lack the size of a larger college, but the committee are confident that their event will make up for it in atmosphere. In a smaller sized college, May Balls have the potential to be more intimate and inclusive. That means less queuing, and more time to enjoy the entertainment and soak up the atmosphere.
What better way to party the evening away than with a full set of musicians and live music? Fiona Calvert and Christy Wensely, the two May Ball Presidents, have revealed their headline act to Varsity, Radio On, which will be accompanied by the student run Churchill Jazz band. The evening will also featuring some of the college's own talented musicians. There will also be a casino, mask making and inspired cocktails.
At just £75, Clare Hall is the cheapest May Ball going and offers excellent value for money. It certainly has the potential to be a 'dark horse' in the competition of May Balls this year, in both theme and value. The dining option also comes in at a competitive £100. But despite having lower ticket costs than other balls, Clare Hall is not a May Ball on a budget, promising high quality caterers themed to the tune of NYC.
Clare Hall might not quite make it to the "party of the century" in the 21st, however, it is a serious contender in the running of the "party of May Week". With its small scale community atmosphere, a hit theme, gourmet cuisine and talented musicians, the ball is set to be one of the fanciest birthday parties Cambridge has ever seen.
