2016 has been a roller coaster of a year for many; from Trump, to Brexit to the death of Bowie. Similarly, for the fashion world there has been triumphs and failures, as we witnessed many new styles and trends emerge over the last year. Here is a recap of the top 12 fashion moments, which you may have watched or missed over the last year.

January 2016: Bowie

On the 8th of January the world was devastated by the death of pop legend and fashion icon David Bowie. Bright colours, neon trends and latex fashions made a quick come back; especially following on from Lady Gaga’s tribute performance at the 2016 Grammys. Not only did high end fashion grieve the loss of Bowie, but so too did high street. It wasn’t long before everyone was buying and wearing Bowie prints, Bowie sweatshirts and Bowie bags.

February 2016: Brit Awards

Who can forget the 2016 Brit awards? It wasn’t just about the music but also the fashion; Adele stunned in a red flowering gown, whilst Rihanna and Jourdan Dunn opted for metallic colours and scalloped patterns. It was also the moment when Rihanna and Drake performed a duet; with long sleeve crop tops making a comeback appearance for spring.

March 2016: Back to the 90s

The month when everyone went back to the 90s. From back packs to gingham prints, to dungarees. March this year was marked by the emergence of new spring prints and styles, which certainly were a revival of the 1990s. The superhero film, Batman vs Superman also put the colour ‘black’ back into fashion; with DC and comic prints also making a comeback.

April 2016: Prince

Another death, another fashion icon and pop legend: Prince. Similarly, to Bowie, bright colours made a spring statement. The highlight of this month was the emergence of spots as the new season print, partly influenced by Prince himself. Black and white spots were a key trend and featured throughout the year.

May 2016: Metallic and grunge

The month for celebrity romance. Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston (yes they dated!) were first seen in public. This pulled our attention towards Taylor’s fashion statements, especially her black and white grunge look and her silver metallic dress worn to the Met Gala. Dark shades and metallic fabrics made a comeback following this romance, as well as Swift’s grunge makeup tones and dark brown lipstick.

June 2016: May ball season

Summer had finally arrived, and exams were over for most in Cambridge. May ball dresses and suits were obviously a main focus for May Week, as well as summer skirts and short dresses. Flowery prints and pastel colours were a key trend, as well as blue tones and navy shades; which could have been from the release of the new film Finding Dory.

July 2016: The bomber jacket

July was the month of bomber jackets, especially ones worn by celebs, such as Olivia Palermo’s army green design. With the summer holidays beginning, bomber jackets were the summer season’s hit statement; adaptable and light in material. It didn’t take long before high street stores were stocking them, Topshop and Miss Selfridge were two key stores which sold some of the top designs.

August 2016: Summer dresses

August was certainly the month of the dress. Ruffled dresses, flowery dresses, maxi dresses and slip dresses were the key fashion statement of the month. With the weather warm, dresses and sandals were the ultimate fashion statement.

September 2016: Victoria Beckham

New York fashion week witnessed some hit trends, however the star of the show was Victoria Beckham with her new line. She walked the runway wearing delicate colours, featuring a casual black belt and white shirt. Simple prints, simple colours and soft designs made a comeback as summer 2016 came to an end.

October 2016: Election suits

Election season had begun, and no better than to make a style statement. Hilary Clinton came top with her many different fitted suits, featuring some bright and bold colours. My personal favourite was the navy Ralph Lauren pantsuit at the presidential debate in October.

November 2016: Jumper season

As the temperature dropped woolly jumpers, scarfs and gloves began to appear once more in the high street shops. Roll necks, pastel colours and rose prints were the season’s hottest designs, as well as featuring the woollen bobble hat and matching gloves. Christmas jumpers and knitwear also began to appear in stores.

December 2016: Roses are red

Following on from the Victoria's Secret fashion show in early December, Lady Gaga made her debut, performing with a rose patterned dress. Roses and red flower patterns appeared to make a successful comeback, as many high street stores stocked up for Christmas. Black sequined dresses and jumpsuits also had a revival just before Christmas; but ultimately it was the flower power which made a comeback as the year drew to a close
