15:52 Thanks for tuning in to the first ever Varsity sport live text update, we hope there will be many more.  In the meantime, enjoy our photo galleries from Twickenham and shortly you will be able to read a full match report and reaction.

15:50 That's it!  Swanson, who has been excellent, converts the try but Cambridge are the Varsity winners!  Man of the match is Jimmy Richards, you can't argue with that, it was a great match punctuated by some exciting and concise attacking from the Cambridge backs, who also surprised everyone with a resilient defensive display.

15:49 It's irrelevant, but Cheesman goes over the line and Swanson will have the chance to make the scoreline look more respectable.

80 minutes gone...it's going to be all over!

15:48 And there's a blue for Predee as the last seconds tick down.

15:47 Our fingers may be cold here at Twickenham but Cambridge have warmed our hearts as the heroic Jamie Gilbert gets his Blue coming on for Crossley at hooker.

15:45 Cambridge have done their homework on Catling, who has had no space and barely a sniff of the ball.  He gets a chance to show his pace on a loose ball but ultimately disappoints in the speed stakes against David Riley.  2 minutes to go, 11 points up, Cambridge ball.  Dare we say it's all over?

15:44 Hayden Handerson on for Wheeler in the Cambridge back row.

15:43 Greenwood would have had a clear run in to the line but is obviously no Maradona as his left foot lets him down.

15:41 Oxford substition, scrum half Madon replaced by Klopper.  Oxford are having a large amount of possession but not making much progress and the pressure is released by a Cambridge interception.  Cambridge looking fairly comfortable, dare I say it.

15:36 Beautiful kick from Ross "unusual name" Broadfoot to save Cambridge from further danger within their own half.

15:34 Another handling error lets down the Dark Blues as Cheesman fumbles a pass to Brown on the wing.  Maybe they should be looking to the other wing to Tim Catling, who has barely got a look in.

15:33 The hairless Cambridge front row almost breaks through again only to give away a knock-on.

15:30 NOTHING CONTROVERSIAL ABOUT THAT ONE though, as Jamie Hood receives a ball from Sandy Reid and tears the Oxford defence to shreds in a sensational solo run.  Cambridge are threatening to take control under the reassuring presence of Dan Vickerman, but it is thanks to the backs' fantastic attacking play that the scoreline is as it is.

15:29 Almost into the last 15 minutes, and Cambridge, since being woken up by Oxford's first score, have been excellent at finishing their moves.  That said, there was some controversy about that last try decision.

15:28 OH NO HE DOESN'T!  After an agonising 3 minute video replay, the try is given!!  Quite superb play from Richards, who has been electric since minute 30.  Broadfoot converts and this is becoming a fabulous advert for University rugby.

15:26 An incredible last-ditch tackle from Dan Catling saves the Dark Blues as full back Jimmy Richards is inches away from giving the lead back to Cambridge.

15:25 In depth analysis from Varsity rugby expert Ed Thornton: "It's interesting how both kickers are called Ross.  I mean it's quite an unusual name."  Profound.

15:23 Nick Hadon finds a hole in the Cambridge defence, Ross Swanson converts, and we're back where we were ten minutes ago.  This is really getting quite good.

15:21 Karl Outen comes on for Oxford.

15:20 On a slightly unrelated note, have Cambridge back row Will Jones and Men Behaving Badly actor Martin Clunes ever been seen in the same room?

15:18 Ex-Varsity Sport Editor reckons "it's a totally different game this half", and indeed Cambridge look a lot more creative going forward.  That said, they're under pressure now as Oxford will look to hit back soon.

15:16 TRY FOR CAMBRIDGE!!!!! Ross Broadfoot goes through after an electric few minutes for the Light Blues.  Ref goes to video and the try is confirmed.  Broadfoot does the business on the conversion.  Get in!

15:14 This match has suddenly opened right up.  After the agonising almost-stalemate of the first half this latest period of frenzied play has got everyone, both players and crowd, thoroughly fired up.  Epic run by Fred Burden who goes past five Oxford defenders, setting off a chain reaction within the Cambridge back line.

15:13 Penalty kicked for Oxford by Swanson and it's all very close again.

15:12 Cambridge sub: Jamie Hood (scrum half), Sandy Reid (centre) and Andy Daniel (prop) come on for Rowe, Shepherd and Conlon as Cambridge's side is now one man away from what Varsity predicted in its last issue.

15:09 After a lineout deep in the Oxford half, Will Jones charges through to touch down right between the posts.  A walk in the park for Broadfoot to convert....OXFORD NEARLY BREAK THROUGH on the immediate counter-attack but full back Mahoney loses his footing ten yards from the line and the threat is diffused.

TRY FOR CAMBRIDGE...Will Jones

15:06 Ross Swanson converts a simple penalty and the lead extends to 5 points.  Not much has happened yet this half and Cambridge will need to get into their stride soon or risk losing all momentum.

15:05 Former Australian and Oxford centre Joe Roff says in the programme "I firmly believe the Varsity match brings more and more meaning to rugby as a sport", and indeed today's game has brought out the punters.  Even The Tab and TCS are here!

15:04 The second half, as per the first, starts scrappily with inconsistent handling.

15:02 Meanwhile Oxford Consultant Coach Brian Ashton says that Oxford have been "all ambition, no decision", and indeed Cambridge will be happy to only find themselves 2 points down after so much defending.  Ashton quite rightly rejects his interviewer's suggestion that the lack of tries is a symptom of the sport's wider problems.

15:02 And they're off!  Oxford have an early line-out in Cambridge territory.

14:55 Well, BT have a lot to answer for, but the good news is that the stadium has come alive thanks to the last few minutes, in particular some cutting attacking rugby from the Light Blues which should encourage them going into the second period.

14:45 An epic update for you now.  The Oxford forwards piled the pressure on Cambridge who, after an agonising wait for the tv judge, escaped.  Yet their luck did not last as a penalty try was given a few moments later which was duly converted to give the Dark Blues a 7-0 lead.  Cambridge were seemingly awoken from their slumber by the try and, inspired by full back Jimmy Richards, went on the rampage.  First, Will Jones should have played in James Greenwood on the left wing but was bundled out inches from the line.  No matter, moments later Richards danced through the defence, laid the ball off to winger Dave Riley, who in turn gave James Greenwood the chance to finish on the overlap which he did not miss.  Broadfoot then came close with a difficult conversion, but did not quite have the accuracy as a thrilling last ten minutes leave the scoreboard at 7-5 in Oxford's favour at half-time.

14:30 Carter back on for the Dark Blues.

14.28: Some nice running from Cambridge is thwarted once again by poor decision making as second row Will Jones decides for some reason to kick away the ball.  Cambridge still have posession and are frustratingly close to the tryline.

14:25 Half way through the first half.  Still no score, and no one's really got going.  Oxford winger Catling has begun to see the ball in space a bit more, which may open things up somewhat.

14:23 Blood replacement for Oxford.  Carter comes off for Johnson.

14: 23 Freddie Shepherd is still looking like Cambridge's most dangerous player, though poor handling is letting both sides down and that's another knock-on.

14:22 Cambridge are defending resolutely as Oxford gradually grab the game by the scruff of the neck.

14:18...but an unforced knock-on from Oxford centre J.R. Allfrey lets Cambridge off and it's a Light Blue scrum on the 5-metre line.

14:17 Some terrific Oxford passing involving forwards and backs stretches Cambridge who are having to dig deep to keep the Dark Blues out...

14:14 The tall Cambridge centre Freddie Shepherd is doing a lot of running, and almost looks dangerous.  Meanwhile the even taller Will Jones, second row, makes some progress with ball in hand.

14:14 Cambridge are shading it, though no team has really come close to the line.  The Oxford fans are making a lot more noise, even if it is unbearably high-pitched and coming from the numerous primary school children who find themselves at Twickers.

14:13...which Ross Broadfoot has neither the accuracy or power to convert.

14:12 Greenwood almost got away for Cambridge in the first real bit of excitement we've seen, but was dragged back on the 22.  But Cambridge keep up the intensity and earn a kickable penalty.

14:10 Dan Vickerman receiving medical attention for one reason or another.

14:07 It has to be said, Twickenham looks magnificent in the afternoon sun and the Oxford and Cambridge flags make a picturesque pair beside the Union Jack.  Let's hope the rugby will match the setting for aesthetic quality.

14:04 Handbags at ten paces, and the crowd get rather excited.  The teams look like giants compared to this morning's match.

14:02 The game has kicked off at a ridiculously frenetic pace as both teams look to get the first hit in and handling errors are made.

14:00 The anthem is over and done with, and we're off!

Teams for today:

Cambridge: Conlon, Crossley, Harris, Jones, Vickerman (c), White, Wheeler, Maidment (forwards).  Rowe, Broadfoot, Riley, Burden, Shepherd, Greenwood, Richards (backs).

Oxford: Lutton, Rosen (c), Tomaszcyk, Kench, Van Zyl, Carter, McKeen, Davies (forwards).  Haydon, Swanson, Catling, Allfrey, Cheesman, Browne, Mahony (backs).

The teams are in the tunnel now.

13:50 The Cambridge boys are having a tackling practice whilst the Oxford guys have their kicking boots on.  Only 10 minutes to go now and the stands are about a third full.

13:20 Slowly but surely, Twickenham is filling up for the day's main event, which will kick off at 2pm.  Earlier on, the U21s disappointingly lost 53-17 to the Dark Blues after captain Tom Stanton was sent off in the first ten minutes. This is the last chance to salvage something for Cambridge, who have lost the Colleges, 21A, 2nd team and 21s this year, but a victory in the Blues match would be worth more than all those put together. Stay with Olly West for the preamble, team news, live updates, photos and match report.

The Oxbridge Varsity Rugby Match starts at 2pm, Thursday 10 December.
