Theatre: Pick Me Up
Jess Poon is certainly picked up by this hilarious show
Pick me up is not one to put down. In fact, the only downward dimension to this show was the fact that it had me sliding off the edge of my seat, shaking with laughter. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that the rest of the audience found this equally, if not more amusing than I did.
Spanning a range of genres from satire to silliness, Pick me up is a menagerie of the stylistics of Simon Pegg mated with the insane gimmicks of a mad surgeon. Wave after wave of cracks about kings, kids, and koi, with a genius narrative thrown in for good measure. Ever-referential, the sketches featured trains, plains, and a whole lot of imagination.
Hold the creme de la creme - these guys are the black coffee of comedy if nothing else. Bitterly macabre, never sombre; even the errors were perfectly staged- though this was hugely due to the hilarious props which included switchblades and baby dolls. The props mentioned were subject to marvellous abuse as well as being put to excellently Tarantino-esque use.
Never have I laughed, nor cried so much at a show. So visceral in parts that Romans would cower, yet well-weighted with some very surreal moments. I left confused and in tears (of laughter) - The bile (of laughter-induced vomit) rising in my throat. Bring Kleenex - I promise a messy night.
