207 Cambridge students signed up to the online service to connect with potential patronsSeeking Arrangement

Cambridge is one of the fastest growing universities in the UK for students seeking sugar daddies and mommas.

The website SeekingArrangement.com has revealed that 207 students from the University of Cambridge signed up to its service in 2015, making it the fourth ‘Fastest Growing Sugar Baby’ university in the United Kingdom.

The University of Portsmouth topped the poll with 216 new members, while the University of Oxford trailed at in twentieth position, with 71. Five London universities were also featured in the top twenty.

The results suggest the increasing popularity of SeekingArrangement with students. In 2013, it was reported that the site recruited more students from Cambridge than any other UK university in 2012. Three years later, the number of users among Cambridge students has grown by nearly 20 per cent.

The increase in Cambridge students becoming ‘sugar babies’ is part of a much faster acceleration around the country. Seeking Arrangement claims that there are now 225,000 UK students registered on the site, a 40 per cent rise compared to the previous year.

The news follows Varsity's exclusive investigation, in which Cambridge sugar babies described their experiences on the site. While some described their experiences as positive and enjoyable, others condemned the site as “a system which exploits women”.

One of the Cambridge sugar babies interviewed claimed that “it is common practice for someone working for the site to approach ‘sugar babies’ and offer them considerable amounts of money for interviews.” She accused the site of conducting practice interviews in which they are “strongly advised to downplay – or rather omit entirely – any negative aspect of the site.”

Speaking to Varsity, Seeking Arrangement’s EU spokesperson claimed that while the site regularly reaches out to its members for press opportunities, “we do not alter personal accounts of experience by members.” They denied that they conducted practice interviews, adding that “we pride ourselves in providing a balanced account of user experiences.”

In addition to the university poll, Seeking Arrangement has released data regarding the backgrounds of its 2015 class: “56 per cent of university Sugar Babies hail from middle and upper-middle class families, while 20 per cent are from high income families, and 24 percent from low income.”

The site claims that the average monthly allowance in 2015 for a UK sugar baby – usually aged between 21 and 27 years old - was £2,000. Students spent 36 percent of this allowance on “tuition”, while 20 percent went towards “books.”

When Varsity questioned how this information was collected from its members in the United Kingdom, SeekingArrangement.com responded that their press release “includes data from the website and member surveys”.

According to the same data, undergraduate students make up 82 per cent of the UK student sugar baby population.

Brandon Wade, the founder and CEO of Seeking Arrangement, has released a statement responding to the data collected in 2015. “The United Kingdom ranks high compared to the rest of the world when it comes to well-being and quality of life, but home students would beg to differ,” he says. “While some students choose debt or slog away at low paying jobs, university Sugar Babies are afforded a lifestyle of higher quality.”
