University submits plans for huge West Cambridge development
The council has received plans for a large accommodation and housing development in West Cambridge
Plans for a substantial development in North West Cambridge have been submitted to Cambridge City Council and South Cambridgeshire District Council by Cambridge University.
The proposals concern university owned land between Huntingdon Road and Madingley Road.
In it plans are drawn for both university and community wide development.
This includes new housing and accommodation for both university members and members of the public, research buildings and major commercial infrastructure.
Under the plans there would be 1,500 houses and flats for university staff, accommodation for 2,000 post-graduate students, and 1,500 houses and flats that will be up for sale to the public.
While there will be at least 60,000 square metres of academic floorspace, there has also been astrong focus on the wider community with plans for police, shops, primary schools and a communitycentre, among others, included.
The university believes that the plans are integral to maintaining its reputation as a world-classinstitution and that the scheme is necessary in order to continue to attract staff and post-graduatestudents of the calibre needed to maintain this reputation.
A decision could come as early as next Spring and in the meantime the councils will be holding twopublic drop-in sessions. Further details of the consultation and the application itself can be found here.
