You'd batter believe it! Andrew is through to the Bake Off finalBBC/Love Productions

The pipe dream continues for Cambridge alumnus Andrew Smyth, as tonight's episode of the Great British Bake Off saw him win a spot in next week's final.

Patisserie Week was easy as pie for Andrew, as he impressed judges Mary and Paul with his palmiers, savarin and fondant fancies to win Star Baker. Meanwhile, Selasi crumbled under the pressure, making it his turn to leave the famous bunting-adorned tent.

Smyth, who graduated from Sidney Sussex with an Engineering degree in 2013, has enjoyed a steady rise throughout TV's favourite baking competition, wowing the judges and audience alike with his intricate designs and exacting precision.

And now, he faces amateur baking's ultimate test: the Bake Off final. Also getting a slice of next week's action are Candice and Jane. Who will be victorious? The proof is in the pudding.

Previous show winners have gone on to have their own recipe books, food columns and even TV shows, so the cakes – ahem, stakes – are high, and all three remaining contestants will be wanting a piece of the pie, plus the chance to make some dough off the back of their on-screen success.

Andrew has done exceedingly well to get so far in the competition, but taking home the top prize in the final round would surely be the icing on the cake. Is he the greatest thing since sliced bread? Next week, the nation will find out.

Cambridge alumni have historically gone on to achieve great things in all kinds of fields – from medicine to literature to entertainment. But with Bake Off success so close Andrew can taste it, the University may yet prove it can have its cake and eat it, too.
