Winner of this year's Footlights Harry Porter Prize, Warp FactorADC Theatre

Theatre

It’s a great week for new writing this week with the HATCH writing showcase (Mon 9th March, 8pm, ADC bar). Following their "watermelon-fulled frenzy" at the Corpus playroom, HATCH is back to present short, dynamic pieces from new writers. Expect diamonds in the rough. Then there’s the winner of the 2015 Footlights Harry Porter prize, Warp Factor (Thurs 12th - Sat 14th March, 11pm, ADC). This is the very bizarre-sounding brainchild of Footlights Committee member Oliver Taylor and promises "farcical sci-fi adventure" and no shortage of rapid-fire cerebral comedy.

For a very different night, head to CUADC’s RENT (Weds 11th - Sat 21th March at 7.45pm and matinées Sat 14th/21st, 2.30pm, ADC). This is sure to be a rousing, foot-stomping production of the famous musical, which tells the story  a group of friends struggling to make it in the big city under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. Bridging the gap between new and old writing is Cabin Pressure (Tues 10th - Sat 14th March, 7pm, Corpus Playroom). Adapted from a BBC radio play of the same name, this Corpus main show follows the shenanigans of a hapless airline crew.

Clean Bandit return to Cambridge for a sold out gigAtlantic Records UK

Music

Electropop group Clean Bandit (Sun 8th March, doors 7.30pm, Corn Exchange) return to Cambridge for a sold-out gig. Accompanied by one of their favourite featured vocalists, Jess Glynne, and the up and coming Whilk & Misky, it’s not hard to see why the Cantabs are one hot ticket. For a blast of (probably overpriced) musical nostalgia, head to Fever+Backtracks present: The Houseparty (Sat 7th March, 9pm, The Cambridge Union). Alternatively, head to the Fountain Inn’s last ever club night before the venue gives up partyin’. Hosted by Houseology, The Closing Party (Sat 7th March, 9pm-4am) will offer some "truly epic disco, deep, soulful, tech and ass pumpin' house music".

The schedule for this weekend's Watersprite film festival is jam-packedWatersprite

Film

Thanks to the annual Watersprite festival, there are loads of film events taking place over the weekend from Script Lab workshops to stop animation insight sessions. As for short films the ‘Watersprite 2015: Best of the Fest’ will be screening at the Arts Picturehouse (Sun 8th March, 10.55pm). Varsity spoke to Lily Staff, director of the Festival, about what we can expect. Later on in the week make sure you catch the newly released Appropriate Behaviour. Varsity sat down with the director earlier this week to talk about its LGBT+ themes and Annie Hall inspired comedy.

Talks and Exhibitions

Catch Jon Snow at the Union on Friday 13th MarchChatham House

After a lacklustre term, the coming week picks up at the Debating Union. Comedian and former host of Never Mind the Buzzcocks Simon Amstell (Tues 10th March, 5pm) will be talking (hopefully about the episode Preston stormed off set). Journalist and the longest-running presenter on Channel 4 Jon Snow will also be talking (Fri 13th March, 6pm). However, after last year’s cancellation, the second person to walk on the moon, Buzz Aldrin will finally be at the Union (Sat 14th March, 1pm).

At Kettle’s Yard a fascinating exhibition of Henri Gaudier-Brzeska’s drawing styles is being displayed in collaboration with the Circuit group. It runs until 21st June. Whilst at the Fitzwilliam Museum find some time to catch a few of the exhibitions you might have missed earlier this term. A highlight is Moonstrips an exhibit that looks at Eduardo Paolozzi’s use of printed collage.
